How Qantas Points Are Calculated: The Complete Guide

How Qantas Points Are Calculated: The Complete Guide
Last updated: January 2026Updated for the February 2026 QFF overhaul

Understanding how Qantas Points are calculated puts you in control of every booking decision. Whether you're choosing between fare classes, deciding whether a partner airline flight is worth it, or planning your route to status, the formula below explains everything — including how the 2026 Frequent Flyer overhaul changes what counts.

Use our earn points calculator to calculate any route instantly without doing the maths yourself.

The Qantas Points Formula

Qantas Points = Flight Distance (km) × Points Per Kilometre (based on fare class) × Tier Bonus Multiplier

That's the complete formula. Three variables. Here's how each one works.

Variable 1: Flight Distance

Qantas calculates distance using the great-circle (shortest path) distance between airports in kilometres. This is not the actual flight path, which is longer due to routing, air traffic control, and weather. The difference is usually 5–15%.

For example: Sydney (SYD) to Bangkok (BKK) is 7,536 km by great-circle. The actual flight path is approximately 8,000–8,200 km, but Qantas uses the 7,536 km figure for points calculation.

Use our flight points calculator to find the exact distance Qantas uses for any route — no manual calculation needed.

Variable 2: Points Per Kilometre by Fare Class

Every Qantas fare belongs to an earn category, and that category determines how many points you earn per kilometre.

Earn CategoryPoints per kmStatus Credits per kmTypical fare types
Red e-Deal3 pts/km0.025 SC/kmCheapest sale fares
Saver4 pts/km0.03 SC/kmStandard economy
Flex6 pts/km0.05 SC/kmFlexible economy
Business Saver8 pts/km0.06 SC/kmEntry business
Business10 pts/km0.08 SC/kmFull business
First15 pts/km0.12 SC/kmFirst class
Your earn category is set at the time of booking — not at check-in. If you buy a Red e-Deal fare to save money, you earn 3 pts/km regardless of what you do later. This is the single most common reason passengers earn fewer points than expected.

Variable 3: Tier Bonus Multiplier

Qantas Frequent Flyer tier bonuses add a percentage on top of your base earn rate, rewarding frequent flyers with more points for the same flight.

TierStatus Credits per year (2026)Bonus points
Bronze0 – 299 SCNo bonus
Silver300 SC+25% points
Gold700 SC+50% points
Platinum1,400 SC+75% points
Platinum OneInvitation only+100% points
Important 2026 update:Qantas announced in February 2026 that separate “attain” and “retain” thresholds are being merged into a single target per tier, effective 2027. Gold will require 700 SC whether you're qualifying for the first time or renewing.

Worked Example: Sydney to Bangkok, Economy Flex

Worked Example: Sydney to Bangkok (Economy Flex)

Total Points Earned135,648 ptsWithout the Gold tier bonus, this trip would earn only 90,432 points. The tier bonus alone adds 45,216 points — equivalent to a free domestic return flight!

How the 2026 Program Changes Affect Points Earning

Qantas announced its biggest-ever Frequent Flyer overhaul in February 2026. Points earning itself hasn't changed — but how you earn Status Credits (which unlock tier bonuses) has changed significantly.

From late 2026, members can earn up to 140 Status Credits per year through everyday ground spending — shopping, credit cards, utility partners — without flying a single sector. This means:

  • Reaching Silver (300 SC) now requires roughly 160 SC from flights if you maximise ground earning
  • Gold (700 SC) becomes more accessible for members who fly less frequently
  • Points Club is being retired, removing that specific SC-earning pathway

Earning Points on Partner Airlines

Partner airline earn rates are lower than mainline Qantas, and the rules vary by airline and booking class.

  • oneworld partners (Cathay Pacific, British Airways, Japan Airlines): typically earn 3–9 pts/km depending on cabin, AND earn Status Credits
  • Emirates: bilateral partner, earns Qantas Points but generally does NOT earn Status Credits
  • You must have your Qantas Frequent Flyer number in the booking before flying — retro-claims on partner flights can take 4–8 weeks

Why Your Points Were Lower Than Expected

The six most common reasons:

  1. Booked a Red e-Deal or Saver fare without realising the earn rate difference
  2. Forgot to enter your QFF number before the flight — always add it at booking
  3. Flew on a codeshare, not actual Qantas metal — check the operating carrier
  4. Partner airline lower rates apply — Emirates earns at partner rates, not Qantas rates
  5. Sector distance was shorter than expected — check the exact km in our calculator
  6. Retro-claim processed at wrong rate — verify your earn category on the booking confirmation

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about this topic

It depends on your fare class. Red e-Deal earns 3 points per km, Economy Flex earns 6 points per km, and Business Class earns 8–10 points per km. Gold and Platinum members receive a 50–75% bonus on top of the base rate. Use our earn points calculator to see the exact figure for your route and fare class.
No. You must be a Qantas Frequent Flyer member and book an eligible fare. Some deeply discounted fares on partner airlines earn zero points. Red e-Deal fares earn points but at the lowest rate (3 pts/km). Check your earn category when booking — it is set at the time of purchase and cannot be changed after.
Qantas uses the great-circle distance between airports in kilometres — the shortest path between two points on Earth. This is shorter than the actual flight path by 5–15%. The distance is fixed per route and does not change based on the aircraft or routing used on a specific day.
Qantas-operated flights: within 24–72 hours of completing the flight. Partner airline flights: up to 4–8 weeks. If points do not appear within those windows, submit a retro-claim via the Qantas Frequent Flyer website. Keep your boarding pass until points post.
Gold members earn 50% more points on every eligible flight. Platinum members earn 75% more. On a long-haul Business Class return flight, the tier bonus alone can add 50,000+ points. Bronze members earn the base rate with no bonus; Silver members receive a 25% bonus.
The core points earn formula hasn't changed. What changed is how you earn Status Credits — which determine your tier and therefore your bonus multiplier. From late 2026, up to 140 SC can be earned through ground spending. Points Club is being retired from late 2026.
