The biggest mistake Qantas members make is treating all redemptions as equal. A Business Class flight to London can deliver 4+ cents per point. A gift card delivers 0.4 cents. This guide gives you a complete map of where your points are actually worth spending.

Classic vs Classic Plus: Which Should You Book?
Classic Flight Rewards and Classic Plus Flight Rewards are the two main options for using points on flights — and they work very differently.
| Feature | Classic Flight Rewards | Classic Plus Flight Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | Fixed zone-based table | Dynamic (like cash fares) |
| Typical CPP | 1.5 – 5.0c | 1.0 – 1.5c |
| Availability | Limited — fixed seat allocation | Broad — most flights available |
| Price since 2019 | Unchanged | Fluctuates daily |
| Earn points on booking? | No | No |
| Earn Status Credits? | No | No (Points Club retiring 2026) |
| Best for | Maximum value on any route | When Classic seats are sold out |
Classic Flight Reward Zone Pricing Table
Classic Flight Rewards use a zone-based pricing table, unchanged since 2019. The points cost depends on your origin and destination zone, not the specific flight.
| Route (one-way) | Economy | Business | First |
|---|---|---|---|
| Australia Domestic (short) | 8,000 | 18,000 | N/A |
| Australia Domestic (long) | 18,000 | 36,000 | N/A |
| Australia–NZ / Pacific | 18,000 | 45,000 | N/A |
| Australia–SE Asia | 35,000 | 70,000 | N/A |
| Australia–NE Asia (Japan/Korea) | 45,000 | 90,000 | N/A |
| Australia–UK/Europe | 70,000 | 144,000 | 202,800 |
| Australia–USA | 55,000 | 108,000 | N/A |
| Australia–Middle East | 54,000 | 108,000 | N/A |
Classic Plus: When More Points Means More Access
Classic Plus Flight Rewards are dynamically priced at approximately 1.0c per point for Economy and 1.5c per point for Business and First. Unlike Classic, pricing fluctuates — the same seat can cost more points tomorrow than it costs today.
The case for Classic Plus is purely availability. When Classic seats are sold out — particularly on peak dates, popular routes like SYD–LAX, or during holidays — Classic Plus gives you access to virtually every available seat. You pay more points, but you get to travel.
Classic Plus is always better value than Points Plus Pay for the same seat. But it is almost always worse value than a Classic Reward for the same route.
Classic Upgrade Rewards: The Underrated Option
Classic Upgrade Rewards let you top up a purchased Economy ticket to Business Class using points — and the value can match or exceed a full Classic Reward booking.
SYD–LHR: upgrading a purchased Economy Flex ticket to Business costs 72,000 points one-way. At a typical $3,000 price difference between Economy and Business, this works out to:
Worked Calculation: Economy Flex to Business (SYD → LHR)
Key advantage over Classic Rewards: you earn Status Credits on the purchased Economy fare, plus you get Business Class service. The trade-off is the cash cost of the Economy ticket.

Partner Airline Classic Rewards: Premium Cabins on Fewer Points
Booking partner airline seats with Qantas Points often delivers outstanding value — and availability is frequently better than Qantas metal.
Cathay Pacific First Class
Bookable on Qantas Points at Classic Reward pricing. Consistently regarded as one of the world's best First Class products with CPP regularly exceeding 4.0c.
Japan Airlines Business Class
Accessible via Qantas Classic Rewards, with excellent availability on many Pacific and Asian routes compared to Qantas metal.
Emirates Business/First Class
Redeem on Emirates flights for industry-leading Business and First Class cabins. Redemption availability is often better than on Qantas metal.
The new Qantas reward search tool (mid-2026) shows Classic Reward availability across 30 partner airlines over 12 months — making these hidden-gem redemptions far easier to find.
Points Plus Pay: Convenience at a Cost
Points Plus Pay lets you split payment between points and cash. The effective value is approximately 0.5–0.6 cents per point — lower than any flight redemption option. It exists for convenience, not value.
The one legitimate use case: you need 30,000 points for a Classic Reward and only have 27,000. Using Points Plus Pay to cover the shortfall can make sense. Using it for an entire booking rarely does.
Redemptions to Avoid
Low-value redemptions ranked worst to least-worst:
Gift cards
The single worst option — represents direct cash loss
Qantas Store merchandise
Avoid unless you absolutely have expiring points
Car hire
Extremely poor yield compared to booking flights
Hotel rewards
Low value unless booked at very specific high-value properties
Points Plus Pay on cheap domestic routes
A low-yield compromise designed for convenience
