Qantas Points Plus Pay: Is It Worth Using?
Last updated: March 2026Classic Plus comparison and 2026 search tool impact added

Points Plus Pay is one of the most misunderstood features of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program. Many members use it regularly without realising they're getting 0.5 cents per point — when the same points are worth 3–5 cents on a Business Class flight. This guide gives you an honest analysis and a clear framework for knowing exactly when Points Plus Pay is and isn't worth it.

How Points Plus Pay Works

Points Plus Pay lets you split the cost of a Qantas flight between Qantas Points and cash. You choose the number of points you want to use (any amount from 500 upward), and the remaining balance is charged to your credit card.

The exchange rate is fixed: Qantas values your points at approximately 0.5–0.6 cents each when used via Points Plus Pay. This means:

APPROX. REDUCTION10,000 Points$50 – $60
APPROX. REDUCTION50,000 Points$250 – $300
APPROX. REDUCTION100,000 Points$500 – $600

You earn Qantas Points and Status Credits on the cash portion of the payment — but not on the points portion. The seat you get is a standard revenue seat; there is no separate Classic Reward allocation.

The Real Value of Points Plus Pay

Points Plus Pay delivers approximately 0.5–0.6 cents per Qantas Point. This is the lowest CPP of any Qantas Points use case except gift cards.

If you regularly use Points Plus Pay for all your bookings, you are systematically getting some of the worst value possible from your Qantas Points. A Business Class Classic Reward delivers 3–5× more value per point. Even domestic Economy Classic Rewards deliver 0.7–0.9c CPP — better than Points Plus Pay.

Points Plus Pay vs Classic Plus Flight Rewards

Classic Plus Flight Rewards are almost always better value than Points Plus Pay for the same seat. Classic Plus delivers approximately 1.0–1.5 cents per point — double to triple the CPP of Points Plus Pay.

If Classic Reward seats are unavailable on your dates, the decision order should be:

Flight Redemption Decision Hierarchy

1

Classic Flight Reward

BEST VALUE

Highest CPP value, fixed zone-based pricing table, limited seat allocations. Always check first.

2

Classic Plus Flight Reward

AVERAGE VALUE

Slightly lower CPP value, dynamic cash-based points pricing. Excellent availability when Classic is sold out.

3

Points Plus Pay

LAST RESORT

Lowest CPP value, fixed 0.5¢ exchange rate. Infinite seat availability since it treats points as cash.

When Points Plus Pay Actually Makes Sense

Points Plus Pay has two legitimate use cases. Outside of these, it is not recommended.

Use Case 1: The Shortfall Top-Up

You need 30,000 points for a Classic Reward seat. You have 27,000 points. Using Points Plus Pay to cover the 3,000-point shortfall — paying perhaps $15–$18 in cash — is a reasonable use of the feature. You're getting the Classic Reward seat (at the full Classic CPP) and only using P+P for a small bridging amount.

Use Case 2: When Cash Fares Spike and CPP Approaches 1.0c

On some routes during peak periods, cash fares spike dramatically. If a SYD–BNE fare normally costs $150 but spikes to $600 during an event weekend, and you have 100,000+ points, the effective P+P CPP against the spiked fare approaches or exceeds 1.0c — which starts to be defensible. Calculate case-by-case.

The Availability Advantage Nobody Talks About

Points Plus Pay always has seats available. Unlike Classic or Classic Plus Rewards, there is no separate seat allocation — any available revenue seat can be purchased with P+P.

For genuinely inflexible travellers (fixed dates for a wedding, funeral, or major event), the availability advantage of Points Plus Pay has real practical value even at the lower CPP. The choice becomes: get to the destination at 0.5c CPP, or miss the event entirely.

How the 2026 Search Tool Changes Things

The new Qantas Classic Reward search tool, launched mid-2026, shows availability across 30 partner airlines over 12 months. Previously, finding Classic Reward seats on flexible dates was difficult, which pushed members toward P+P or Classic Plus.

With the new tool, the “I can't find Classic seats” problem is significantly reduced. This weakens the main availability argument for Points Plus Pay. Members who previously defaulted to P+P due to search difficulty should revisit their strategy.

Decision Framework: Should You Use Points Plus Pay?

Work through this checklist before using Points Plus Pay:

Checklist: Points Plus Pay Decision Framework

1Are Classic Flight Reward seats available on my dates? If yes, book Classic. Do not use P+P.
2Are Classic Plus seats available? If yes, Classic Plus delivers 2–3× better CPP than P+P. Prefer Classic Plus.
3Am I using P+P for a small shortfall only? If covering < 10% of the points needed, this is an acceptable use case.
4Are dates genuinely fixed with no flexibility? If dates are non-negotiable and there is no Classic/Classic Plus, P+P may be the only option.
5Is the cash price spiked significantly above normal? If the cash fare is 2–3× higher than normal, recalculate the CPP. It may approach 1.0c.

If you answered “no” to all of the above, do not use Points Plus Pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about this topic

Points Plus Pay typically delivers 0.5–0.6 cents per Qantas Point — significantly lower than Classic Flight Rewards (1.5–5.0c) and even lower than most hotel or car hire redemptions. It exists for convenience and as a shortfall solution, not as a high-value redemption option.
Rarely on a CPP basis. However, Points Plus Pay always has seat availability — unlike Classic Rewards which have limited allocations. If Classic Rewards are sold out for your dates, Points Plus Pay may be your only points-based option. In that case, compare it against Classic Plus before deciding.
Points Plus Pay is available on most Qantas-operated flights and some partner flights. It is not available on all partner airlines. The key advantage is that you can access virtually any available seat — there is no separate Classic Reward allocation to contend with.
Qantas allows you to use as few as 500 points with Points Plus Pay, with the rest paid in cash. This makes it useful as a shortfall solution when you need a small top-up to reach a Classic Reward threshold — though this use case requires Classic Reward availability.
The new Qantas search tool launched in mid-2026 shows Classic Reward availability across 30 partner airlines over 12 months. This dramatically improves the ability to find Classic Reward seats — reducing the main argument for Points Plus Pay (lack of availability). With better tools, fewer members need to fall back on Points Plus Pay.
